Jane Eyre- Great romantic novel? Feminist re-working of the Cinderella fairy tale? A perceptive and daring work which offers accurate representations of female desire, homelessness, vascular dementia and social inequality? Or a melodramatic depiction of madness and colonialism, which can leave a modern reader feeling uncomfortable about where their sympathies lie? Spend a day exploring one of the best novels in the English language through close reading, discussion and reference to the illustrations of Jane Eyre by Paula Rego. Participants should read or re-read at least part of the novel before they attend the course to appreciate the text with fresh eyes.
